MindUP is a school-based programme grounded in neuroscience, mindful awareness, positive psychology and social emotional learning. As part of our training and support we provide parent information workshops demonstrating the benefits of MindUP and how to apply some of the practices at home to support the whole family.

The programme is designed to positively impact the entire school community and this includes families. The family is the first place of learning for social emotional skills, guided by what qualities parents and communities consider important.

Through bespoke workshops and take-home resources, we actively engage with parents/carers to reinforce MindUP skills and practices in the home environment. During our 3-term model of training and support for your school we offer two MindUP at home workshops to help promote whole child wellbeing and for the knowledge and understanding of the theory and practices to extend beyond the classroom.

When my child is having a moment, we know what to do to calm down, we do the MindUP breathing together.

Parents report better mental health of children

Parents talk to us about the effects of MindUP on their children and how it has a positive impact at home.

MindUP helps families embrace connection, growth, and joy through the recognition of the value of living in the moment. MindUP helps families appreciate the gift of family life, even during good times and the tough times. Parents in a MindUP family learn to manage stress and relate to their children with empathy and kindness. MindUP helps families pay attention to developing the whole child, with particular interest given to social and emotional learning.

MindUP For Families Support Pack
We have created a set of comprehensive resources (below) to help bring MindUP into your home to support you and your family. These resources form part of our MindUP For Families course for parents/carers. This course is currently postponed and we are working to make training available in alternative ways.

These resources cover the 6 areas that directly link to the MindUP Curriculum. Each topic includes an information sheet accompanied by practices for you and practices that you can do together as a family. You will develop a greater understanding of the brain, emotions and actions, and you will learn techniques and activities that can enhance the wellbeing of the whole family.

Keep an eye on this webpage and our social media (@MindUPUK) for updates.

It’s just been life-changing for me. I felt like there was such a weight lifted.

In the light of everything that’s going on at the moment, it’s made me go into this week so much calmer. With this situation, we’re just going to enjoy our time. I feel really quite calm about it.

Teaching children to focus on and control their breathing can help them become less reactive and more reflective when feeling anxious or stressed. The more controlled breathing is practised, the more calm and mindful they can become.

We invite you to listen and follow our Brain Break (audio below). Take time to pause, listen and breathe together, this will help strengthen focus and support emotional balance for all the family.

Try to take a Brain Break together 3 times a day. Click here for the written Brain Break practice.

Listen to Uz Afzal, MindUP Consultant, guide you through a Brain Break.

● Connect with your child by taking a mindful walk together: listening to the sounds around you, this fosters focused attention.

● Find time in your day to express what you are grateful for: this shifts our thinking to a calmer more content perspective.

● Join together daily in a quiet, focused breathing exercise: focus your attention on your breath, notice your tummy rise and fall as you take deep slow breaths to bring calm and reduce stress.

● At the end of the day take time to share with your child one or more things that went well today: this helps foster a positive mindset.

● Think more clearly

● Act in a reflective manner

● Better regulate their emotions

● Reduce their stress

● Make better decisions

● Develop self-awareness

We are now more grateful, I’m more grateful to my children and it’s changed their behaviour. They do things without me asking and it’s alleviated a lot of the stress which has had a knock-on to everyone’s moods and wellbeing.

In 2019, our founder Goldie Hawn collaborated with Moshi Twilight to create an exclusive sleep story. This audio-only app helps children fall asleep independently using enchanting storytelling, magical music and soothing sounds. Join Goldie on a sleepy journey as she discovers how mindfulness and sweet dreams go together, hand in hand.

Newly released! You can now take a Brain Break with Goldie Hawn to help you focus your attention, regulate your emotions and ease your worries away, the Goldie way.

‘Goldie the Mindful Moshling’
Narrated by Goldie Hawn

Supported by research, this book outlines simple techniques such as mindful breathing, sensing and thinking. It shows parents and children how to focus on feelings of kindness and optimism that will improve relationships, increase performance through better concentration and lead to emotionally healthy and happy lives.

This is a remarkable book… read it use it: you may find you are doing nothing less than giving back to your children their childhood while they still have a chance to live it.
